BILBAO ORKESTRA SINFONIKOA

Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa gave its first concert at the Teatro Arriaga on 8 March 1922. Born of the civic drive of Bizkaia, the Orchestra carries out the bulk of its activity within the territory, with the support of its loyal audience, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Bilbao City Council.

BOS has collaborated with ABAO since 1953—beginning at the Coliseo Albia with Puccini’s Tosca on 16 August that year—and has since taken part in 284 titles in ABAO’s seasons, marking a long-standing and fruitful partnership.

The Orchestra’s symphonic season takes place at Euskalduna Bilbao, its home venue, and it also runs chamber-music series. Its educational work includes schools and family concerts, as well as social-inclusion workshops. True to its vocation, the Orchestra performs regularly throughout Bizkaia.

Beyond the territory, BOS has performed across Spain, in St Petersburg and Tokyo, on tour in Japan, and regularly at major festivals. It maintains joint programmes with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the University of Deusto and the Teatro Arriaga.

Its discography includes an important collection devoted to Basque composers such as Arambarri, Guridi, Arriaga, Isasi, Usandizaga, Sarasate and Escudero. It has also recorded works by Rodrigo and Takemitsu for EMI Japan, and in 2012 celebrated its 90th anniversary by recording Schönberg’s Gurrelieder live.
