DIDACTIC PROGRAMME

Because there is no age for learning

ABAO Bilbao Opera’s DIDACTIC PROGRAMME was launched 34 years ago with the aim of bringing opera to people, both children as well as adults, for them to better understand it and thus enjoy the emotions generated by music in its purest form.

Proof of the success of the programme is the increase in the number of participants every year as well as its lasting over time.

Each season thousands of students come into contact with the world of opera in a fun and entertaining way through a full programme of activities aimed at education centres, university colleges, music schools and adult education centres.

It consists of several phases in which the following activities are carried out:

ACTIVITIES IN CENTERS EDUCATIONAL

PHASE 1: DIDACTIC TALKS

We go to education centres to give students an inside glimpse of the world of opera in a playful manner: costumes, props, technical staff, cast... Our aim is to make them understand that, beyond what can be seen on stage, there is a lot of fascinating work carried out by a great team of professionals.

Through audiovisual material, we show them the process to prepare an opera including technical as well as artistic aspects.

PHASE 2: GUIDED VISITS TO AN OPERA PRODUCTION

Thanks to these visits, students can contextualize the contents that have been discussed in the talk and relate them to the physical space of the theatre: costume shops, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms and the stage. When the set is up, the theatre is the perfect place for them to get a close look at everything that is involved in an operatic performance.

PHASE 3: ATTENDING PERFORMANCES

The culmination of the programme, where one can live firsthand the aesthetic experience of the music. There are two different options depending on the age:

ABAO Txiki

ABAO TXIKI is ABAO’s programme aimed at the youngest in the family. It has School Sessions specific to the Didactic Programme during school hours (11 a.m.) and Family Sessions* at the weekend. It is held in the Arriaga Teatre.

Each title is recommended for a specific education level, lasts no longer than one hour, has a distinct didactic character and an attractive mise-en-scéne.
Moreover, they have didactic guides and surtitles in Spanish and Basque that contribute to better understanding the contents.

Those centres that attend school performances may request, if they wish to do so, a prior talk on the show, free of charge, in the centre itself.

*If an education centre does not fit due to the seating capacity or because their activity takes place outside school hours, they will be given the possibility to attend the Family Sessions under special conditions.
