American tenor Stephen Costello has been acclaimed as “a prodigiously gifted singer whose voice makes an immediate impact” (Associated Press). Born in Philadelphia and trained at the Academy of Vocal Arts, he came to national attention in 2007 when he made his Metropolitan Opera debut at the age of 26. Since then he has forged a distinguished international career, crowned with the Richard Tucker Award in 2009.
He has sung at many of the world’s major opera houses: Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra National de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Bayerische Staatsoper, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, Arena di Verona, Semperoper Dresden, Hamburgische Staatsoper, and at festivals including Salzburg, Bregenz and Glyndebourne.
In the 2024/25 season he returns to the Metropolitan Opera as the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) and Greenhorn (Moby Dick), sings Roméo (Roméo et Juliette) in Zurich, and takes on the title role in Don Carlo in Munich. On the concert platform he collaborates with Michael Tilson Thomas in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Houston, performs with Kristine Opolais in Mexico, and gives recitals with pianist Anthony Manoli for Arizona Opera.
Recent successes include Carmen at the Bayerische Staatsoper, La bohème at the Met — where he celebrated his 100th performance —, Verdi’s Requiem in Zurich, and his debut as Cavaradossi in Tosca in the United States and Taiwan.
