Architect by training at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Ricardo Sánchez Cuerda has built a distinguished career as a set designer for theatre, dance, zarzuela, opera and musicals, establishing himself as one of the most versatile and renowned figures on today’s stage design scene.
He is a regular collaborator with major international theatres and festivals, having designed productions of opera and ballet such as Carmen (Teatro alla Scala, Milan), Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Teatro Real), El Cristo del Elqui (Santiago de Chile), El Prometeo (Dijon), El gato montés (Kaiserslautern), La parranda (Teatro de la Zarzuela), Lo schiavo (Manaus), Rienzi (Toulouse), Partenope (Naples), Idomeneo (Buenos Aires), La bohème (Denmark), Lucia di Lammermoor (Lisbon), The Dream of a Traveler (Bahrain) and Notre Dame de Paris (China), among many others.
In musical theatre he has created the sets for titles such as Billy Elliot, Grease, West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard, Cabaret, Matilda, Mamma Mia! and The Book of Mormon.
His theatrical designs include highly impactful productions such as Los santos inocentes, The Pillowman, Antony and Cleopatra, Frankenstein, A Doll’s House, Antigone, The Miser and Lúcido.
Over the course of his career he has received numerous awards, including the Talía Prize, the Max Award, the ADE Prize and the Teatro Musical Award.
