LUIS CANSINO

Of Galician origin, he began his musical studies in Vigo and went on to study Singing at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, where he was awarded both the Premio de Honor Fin de Carrera and the Premio Extraordinario “Lucrecia Arana”. He subsequently furthered his training with the celebrated tenor Pedro Lavirgen. After winning the 1st Francisco Alonso Singing Competition in 1990, his international career gained momentum with accolades such as the “Revelación Lírica” Award from the Mexican magazine Proceso and distinctions from cultural institutions across Europe and the Americas. He has taken part in landmark events including the commemoration of Philippine Independence, the Gala for the 150th Anniversary of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, and the celebrations marking the Spanish Presidency of the European Union in Brussels.

He made his debut in 1987 in the Antología Homenaje al Maestro Alonso, and has since worked with conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Nicola Luisotti, Evelino Pidò, Gianluigi Gelmetti and Oksana Lyniv, as well as stage directors including Laurent Pelly, David McVicar, Robert Carsen and Emilio Sagi. His operatic debut came in 1991/92 in Mexico with Carmen and Il barbiere di Siviglia, paving the way for a distinguished international career. His repertoire encompasses a wide range of roles from Escamillo, Enrico, Germont, Amonasro and Iago to Falstaff, Dulcamara and Melitone, moving with ease between dramatic and comic characters.

A renowned zarzuela interpreter, he was principal baritone of José Tamayo’s celebrated Antología and has performed in nearly forty works of the genre. His repertoire also includes premieres and revivals of operas and zarzuelas, together with a strong presence in the symphonic-choral repertoire. He has made numerous recordings for international labels and institutions.
