ENRIC MARTÍNEZ-CASTIGNANI

The Spanish-Italian baritone Enric Martínez-Castignani studied singing and orchestral conducting at the Musikhochschule in Heidelberg-Mannheim, and went on to refine his skills with artists such as Gerard Souzay, Dalton Baldwin, Carlos Chausson, Wolfram Rieger and Riccardo Frizza. Since his debut in La bohème at the Budapest Opera, he has sung in theatres including Opéra National du Rhin, Teatro La Fenice, Opéra de Lyon, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Teatro Real, ABAO Bilbao Opera, Ópera de Oviedo and Gran Teatre del Liceu, working with stage directors such as Robert Carsen, David McVicar and Laurent Pelly.

A specialist in buffo and bel canto repertoire, he has excelled in roles such as Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Taddeo (L’italiana in Algeri), Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut) and Dr Kolenaty (The Makropulos Case), earning recognition for his versatility, vocal assurance and strong stage presence.

Acknowledged as one of Spain’s finest lieder interpreters, he has given recitals at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Palau de la Música Catalana and L’Auditori in Barcelona, performing cycles such as Winterreise, Schwanengesang and Dichterliebe. He has sung with orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Orchestra della Fenice, RTVE Symphony and OBC. A Grammy nominee, he was named “Best Artist of the Year” in 2012. He was also founder and Artistic Director of the LIFE Victoria Lied Festival.
