ALFONSO ROMERO MORA

Born in Madrid, Alfonso Romero Mora began his musical studies at an early age and obtained a degree as a piano teacher. He specialised in early music, Baroque organ, harpsichord and choral conducting, and has been the founder and director of several vocal ensembles. Internationally recognised, he was awarded Third Prize at the European Competition of Stage Directing EOP Camerata Nuova in Wiesbaden (2005) with La Cenerentola, and was a finalist at the International Competition of Opera Directing in Prague (2007) with Alcina.

He made his debut as a stage director in 2003 with Poulenc’s La voix humaine at the Are More Festival in Vigo. Between 2004 and 2010 he was a regular guest at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, where he directed titles such as La serva padrona, Don Carlo and Maria Stuarda. He has signed numerous premieres and productions at theatres including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, ABAO Bilbao Opera, Teatro Real, Teatro de la Maestranza, Mozart Festival, Auditorio de Tenerife and the Danish National Opera, covering a repertoire that includes Andrea Chénier, I puritani, Lucia di Lammermoor, Otello, La voix humaine, Gianni Schicchi, Carmen, Faust, La traviata, Don Carlo, L’elisir d’amore and La forza del destino, among many others.

His recent productions include El gato montés in Kaiserslautern, Luisa Fernanda in Tenerife, Macbeth and La Cenerentola in Las Palmas, and Faust at the Kammeroper Hamburg, chosen by Die Deutsche Bühne magazine as Best Musical Production of the 2022–23 season. Forthcoming engagements include Lucia di Lammermoor and Faust at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, and The Miserly Knight at the Fundación Juan March, selected by El Cultural as one of the best musical productions of 2022.
