Christmas carol flash mob
A group of costumed performers presented several musical excerpts in the middle of a public street.
The initiative was promoted by ABAO Bilbao Opera, in collaboration with Bizkaibus, and featured the artistic participation of Ópera de Cámara de Navarra, which brought part of the opera A Christmas Carol into the street.
The intervention took place at 2:00 p.m. and involved more than thirty members of the cast, including soloists and choir, all dressed as characters from the opera. After performing two scenes from the work, the artists closed the event with the Basque Christmas carol “Ator Ator”, joined by some of the people in attendance.
Earlier that day, the cast had taken part in the morning performance at the Teatro Arriaga and, between that show and the afternoon performance, they were transported by Bizkaibus to the location of the intervention, already in costume—marking the beginning of the flash mob.
Juan Carlos Matellanes, President of ABAO Bilbao Opera, noted that the initiative sought to “bring opera closer to the public and create an unexpected encounter with music in the urban space.”
Meanwhile, the Provincial Councillor for Transport, Mobility and Tourism, Sonia Pérez Ezquerra, stated that Bizkaibus’s collaboration in initiatives such as this “links public transport with cultural actions aimed at audiences of all ages.”
From Bizkaibus, its director Antonio Jaraices explained that the event forms part of the programme “Bizkaibus brings you closer to opera,” designed to encourage children and young people to use public transport and to access culture.
The intervention concluded amid applause from the gathered audience, while many passers-by—surprised by the sudden appearance of the cast in the street—stopped to watch the scene and recorded the moment on their mobile phones. The action created an atmosphere of expectation and curiosity that gradually attracted more people, turning the area for several minutes into an improvised space for cultural encounter.
