Nina Lepilina *

Born in Moscow, Nina Lepilina studied costume design at MCHAT —the Moscow Art Theatre—, where she subsequently worked from 1992 to 1994. She later collaborated with Moidele Bickel on the costume design for Peter Stein’s The Oresteia in Moscow. In 1995, at the invitation of Heiner Müller, she joined the Berliner Ensemble as a guest artist. Since then, she has worked as a freelance costume designer. Her engagements in theatre, opera and dance have taken her to Berlin’s Theater am Halleschen Ufer, Volksbühne, Deutsches Theater/Kammerspiele, Jewish Museum and Konzerthaus, as well as to Hanover State Opera, Ballet and Theatre, the Hans Otto Theatre in Potsdam, Graz Opera, Bonn Opera and theatres in Lucerne, Freiburg and Lübeck. She has also worked for Novosibirsk State Opera as part of a Russian Culture Days co-production with the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. In 2004 she received the Golden Mask Theatre Award for her set design for Living with an Idiot in Moscow. Following The Love for Three Oranges, María de Buenos Aires marks her second collaboration with director Guillermo Amaya at Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.
