How to get to Bilbao

We’ll show you how to arrive without missing a beat

If there is one Spanish city that has undergone a complete transformation, it is Bilbao. A city once known for its industrial and grey character has successfully reinvented itself—embracing culture and the arts, becoming more sustainable, replacing grey with green, and committing to the avant-garde vision of Europe’s great cities.

Still need more reasons? You’ll find yourself wanting to come. Bilbao is an open, welcoming city with excellent connections to Spain, Portugal, and the rest of Europe—by land, air, and sea.

By land

By car

If you are visiting Bilbao by car—a very convenient option—a fast and affordable way to park is to use one of the many car parks located in the city centre or the park-and-ride facilities.

By train

Bilbao’s main railway gateway is Abando Station (Plaza Circular, 2), from where Renfe (Spanish National Railways) offers long-distance connections as well as several commuter rail lines. Renfe long-distance services connect Bilbao with Madrid, Barcelona, Logroño, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Salamanca, Málaga, A Coruña, Vigo, Burgos, León, and Segovia.

By air

By plane

Bilbao International Airport operates more than 600 flights per week, offering direct connections—typically within 1 to 3 hours—to cities such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Geneva, Lisbon, London (Heathrow and Stansted), Madrid, Manchester, Milan, Munich, Oslo, Paris (Charles de Gaulle and Orly), Prague, Rome, Stuttgart, Venice, Naples, Porto, Florence, and many others.

By sea

By ferry

The Port of Bilbao turns the Cantabrian Sea into a true gateway to the city, with a regular ferry service from England. Three times a week, passengers and vehicles travel on the Portsmouth–Bilbao–Portsmouth route aboard two vessels: Cap Finistère and Baie de Seine.

Cruises

The municipality of Getxo, just 10 km from Bilbao city centre, is home to the Port of Bilbao’s new cruise terminal. The city can be reached via Metro Bilbao (Neguri station) or Bizkaibus services (lines 3411 and 3413).
