Marta Herman *
Born in Toronto into a Polish-Canadian family, Marta Herman studied at the University of Western Ontario with Torin Chiles and at the University of Toronto Opera School with Mary Morris. She began her career in Germany with the Oper Frankfurt Young Artist Program and later became a house soloist at Staatstheater Kassel, where she received the Fördergesellschaft Prize in 2019. Her recent and forthcoming engagements include First Norn in Götterdämmerung, Schwertleite and Waltraute in Die Walküre —also covering Erda and Waltraute— in Benedikt von Peter’s Ring cycle at Theater Basel, conducted by Jonathan Nott; a return to Oper Leipzig as Grimgerde; Schwertleite in Die Walküre and Floßhilde in Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung in Wuppertal; Anastasio in Il Giustino and Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte at Theater Luzern; and her debut as Polina in Pique Dame in Kassel. She has sung Schwertleite, Grimgerde and Waltraute in ten productions of Die Walküre, and has appeared at Dutch National Opera, Landestheater Salzburg, Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern and Oper Frankfurt. She is also active in contemporary music and recital work.
