Guillermo García Calvo

Guillermo García Calvo has developed a solid international career as a conductor, with particular recognition in the Wagnerian repertoire. Between 2017 and 2023, he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Theater Chemnitz and Principal Conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra, where he conducted a new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen, whose Götterdämmerung was awarded the prestigious Faust Prize for the best opera production in Germany (2019).

A regular collaborator with the Vienna State Opera, he has conducted more than 250 opera and ballet performances there. He has also performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opéra national de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu and Teatro Real. He made his Spanish debut in 2011 with Tristan und Isolde in Oviedo, where he began his interpretation of Wagner’s complete tetralogy in 2013. In 2016, he conducted Goyescas and El amor brujo at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, made his debut at the Palais Garnier and revived Ramón Carnicer’s Elena e Malvina with the OCNE.

Between 2020 and 2023, he was Music Director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela. He has conducted titles such as La Gioconda (Amics del Liceu Critics’ Award), Don Giovanni in Paris and Siegfried in Oviedo (Ópera XXI Award). His recent and future works include Ariadne auf Naxos at the Maestranza, La traviata in Las Palmas, L’elisir d’amore in A Coruña, Pagliacci in Granada, Pepita Jiménez at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Der fliegende Holländer in Tenerife, a Wagner Gala with Andreas Schager and concerts with the Royal Orchestra.
