Guillermo Amaya
Guillermo Amaya is a stage director, dramaturg and playwright. His work emerges from the interplay between music, text and space, and from his extensive experience in the German Musiktheater tradition. For fourteen years, he developed his professional career in Germany as Oberspielleiter and resident stage director at the Theater für Niedersachsen.
His career has taken him across Germany, Spain, Austria and Peru, encompassing a repertoire that ranges from Monteverdi, Purcell and Mozart to Donizetti, Offenbach, Bernstein, Prokofiev and Wagner, alongside operetta, musical theatre and contemporary works. His productions have been presented at venues including the Teatro Real, Teatro de la Maestranza, Teatro Campoamor, Heidelberg Opera, Teatro Arriaga, Osnabrück Opera, the Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima and the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight.
For Amaya, dramaturgy, adaptation and staging form part of a single creative process. He has created Spanish-language versions of works by various composers, including Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon and Offenbach’s La Périchole. His production of Donizetti’s Adelia was recognised by Der Opernfreund as a discovery of the season.
He has also written and directed theatre, and in 2024 published Cómo se viene la muerte (Ediciones Antígona).
Wagner has occupied a prominent place in his recent work: Lohengrin, originally staged for Ópera de Oviedo and now being revived at Ópera de Tenerife, and Die Walküre, which he will stage for ABAO at Bilbao’s Palacio Euskalduna in January 2027.
