Sophia Maeno *

Born in Schwerin, Germany, mezzo-soprano Sophia Maeno studied singing in Dresden, Rome and Karlsruhe, and furthered her training in Italy, Israel and the United States. She completed her studies with Brigitta Seidler-Winkler, with whom she continues to work vocally. She is a prizewinner of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation “Live Music Now” and the Richard Wagner Association. While still a student, she began collaborating with the SWR Vokalensemble in Stuttgart, of which she was a permanent member from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 she joined the Staatstheater Schwerin as a soloist, appearing in roles such as Olga in Eugene Onegin, the Countess in Der Wildschütz, the Page in Salome, Flora in La traviata and Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte. Since 2016 she has worked as a freelance artist, with engagements at the Hamburger Allee Theater, Theater Erfurt, Landestheater Neustrelitz and Staatstheater Schwerin, singing Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Pisandro and Giove in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Arsamene in Serse, Mrs Sedley in Peter Grimes and Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel. Since the 2017/18 season she has been a resident guest artist in Chemnitz, where her roles include Cherubino, Goffredo, Floßhilde, Orlofsky, Octavian, Marta/Pantalis and Carmen.
