Javier Camarena

Born in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexican tenor Javier Camarena is regarded as one of the leading bel canto specialists of his generation. He studied at the Universidad Veracruzana and the University of Guanajuato, before joining the International Opera Studio of Zurich Opera under the mentorship of Francisco Araiza. Since his professional debut in 2004 as Tonio in La fille du régiment at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, he has built an outstanding international career at houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Royal Opera House, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, San Francisco Opera and Zurich Opera. His repertoire includes roles such as Almaviva, Don Ramiro, Nemorino, Edgardo, Arturo, Elvino, Tamino, Alfredo and Roméo. He has worked with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti, Fabio Luisi, Evelino Pidò and Franz Welser-Möst. His discography includes several albums for Sony and Decca, as well as DVD and Blu-ray recordings. In 2021 he received the International Opera Award for Male Singer of the Year.
