Mario Pontiggia

Born in Las Flores (Buenos Aires), Mario Pontiggia is both an architect and stage director. He was Director of Production at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Artistic Director of the Ópera de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and currently serves as Director of the Fundación Internacional Alfredo Kraus.

He has directed L’incoronazione di Poppea, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, Giulio Cesare, La grotta di Trofonio, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Die Zauberflöte, L’italiana in Algeri, Norma, I puritani, Macbeth, I due Foscari, Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata, Un ballo in maschera, Simon Boccanegra, Otello, Tristan und Isolde, Carmen, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Cavalleria rusticana & Pagliacci, La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Boris Godunov, Ariadne auf Naxos and La voix humaine, among others.

He has staged productions in Buenos Aires and La Plata, in Italy (Cagliari, Florence, Genoa, Messina, Modena, Naples, Palermo, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Rovigo, Sassari, Taormina, Trapani, Treviso, Turin, Venice, Verona), Portugal (Lisbon, Vila Real), Spain (Córdoba, Madrid, Oviedo, Santander, Santiago, Seville, Tenerife), Greece (Athens), France (Nice, Sanxay, Toulouse), Switzerland (Geneva, Zurich) and Japan (Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Osaka, Shibuya, Tokyo).

He inaugurated the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco (2000) and the new Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Opera House (2014).
