Carlos Álvarez

Carlos Álvarez is one of the great voices of the international opera stage. His career has taken him to the world’s leading theatres: Don Carlo in Salzburg under Lorin Maazel — where critics hailed him as the finest Rodrigo of his time —, Otello with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Colin Davis, Don Giovanni with Riccardo Muti at La Scala, Rigoletto in the Arena di Verona, and acclaimed performances at the Metropolitan Opera in Un ballo in maschera, Luisa Miller and Rigoletto. In Vienna he has sung La forza del destino with Zubin Mehta and Otello in Salzburg once again with Muti.

In recent seasons he has appeared at La Scala (Giovanna d’Arco, Le nozze di Figaro, Madama Butterfly), the Vienna Staatsoper (Rigoletto, Otello, Carmen, Falstaff, Tosca), Teatro Real (Tosca, Aida), the Liceu (Hamlet, Andrea Chénier, Otello), the Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Tokyo, La Zarzuela, and many other major houses.

He has received numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, the Cannes Classical Award, the Gold Medals for Merit in the Fine Arts and of the Liceu, Spain’s National Music Prize, and the title of Kammersänger by the Vienna State Opera. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Málaga.
