Anna Bolena, the first opera of "the Donizetti three queens' trilogy" or the "Tudor trilogy", closes the season in May. The ABAO Bilbao Opera completes this famous trilogy following representations of Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux in 2013 and 2015, respectively. This opera, which consolidates the musician from Bergamo and awakens great interest in his formal beauties, is based on the last stage of the life of Anna Bolena, second wife of Henry VIII of England.
Leading this great cast is soprano Angela Meade, the undisputed queen of the Metropolitan, and by her side will be three great voices of international opera: mezzosoprano Silvia Tro Santafé, returning to Bilbao following her excellent 2018 portrayal of Adalgisa in Norma, bass Roberto Tagliavini and tenor Celso Albelo.
It is the national debut co-production of the ABAO Bilbao Opera, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liege, the Royal Opera House Muscat and the Opera de Lausanne, envisioned by ABAO newcomer Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera. A classic, its innovative and original staging sets the story in 1536 London, with the wardrobe and characters being a precise reflection of who they represent: Henry VIII appears dressed just as he was painted by Hans Holbein the Younger in his iconic portrait.
In the musical section, Bilbao will host the demanding and perfectionist baton of Giampaolo Bisanti, directing the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in this, one of the best scores of Donizetti.
